WPM and CPM: what the numbers measure
WPM and CPM describe the same input at different scales. Understanding the character unit and the time used in the calculation is essential when comparing results.
Use a consistent unit
Typing On normalizes committed text to NFC and segments it into Unicode grapheme clusters. Spaces and punctuation count. A visible Bengali or Hindi unit may contain several code points, so its JavaScript storage length is not used as the character count.
Work through an example
If you make 300 evaluated insertion attempts in one minute, CPM is 300 and gross WPM is 300 divided by five, or 60. These normalized words are groups of five units, not a count of actual dictionary words.
Account for remaining errors
If two units remain wrong, net WPM is 60 minus two errors per minute, or 58. If 294 of the 300 attempts were correct, accuracy is 98%. Correcting a mistake affects remaining errors but does not erase the original attempt.
Compare matching methods
Other tools and official exams can use different units, time rules, and penalties. Keep the method consistent within your own practice and check external scoring instructions before making a direct comparison.
