How the studio works, what the scores mean, and where your data stays.
Is Typing On free to use?+
Yes. The typing tests, practice tools, job-exam simulations, and learning guides are free and do not require an account.
How is WPM calculated?+
Gross WPM is evaluated grapheme insertion attempts divided by five and by elapsed minutes. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected error units per minute and never falls below zero. Read our methodology for a worked example.
Can I use Chinese or Japanese input methods?+
Yes. Choose Chinese (Simplified) or Japanese and use an installed input method. Confirm conversion candidates before checking your text; composition is deferred until committed. WPM uses five measured grapheme units per standard word, rather than natural word counts or physical keystrokes.
Can I take a 25-minute test?+
Yes. Choose 25 minutes or any whole-number custom duration from 1 to 25. New passages load automatically while the original timer and scores continue.
Where is my typing history saved?+
History is optional and off by default. When enabled, up to 200 recent results stay in this browser. They do not sync to another device and can be exported or cleared. Custom source text is not saved in history.
Are these official job examination results?+
No. All results are independent self-assessments. Keyboard requirements, speed standards, and error penalties vary by employer or examination. Check the official notice.
Can I use my own text?+
Yes. Open Custom text and paste or import a plain .txt file. The source stays on the current page, and the passage repeats if you reach its end.
What happens if I leave the tab?+
In test and exam modes the clock keeps running. Returning after the time limit submits the result before further typing. Only practice mode has an explicit pause button.
